US discount retailer Dollar General has announced plans to launch an e-commerce site to allow it to reach customers outside its 35-state market coverage. The site will be supported by GSI Commerce in a multi-year agreement and will go live on September 8 at www.dollargeneral.com.
The site will offer both name brand and private label merchandise including health and beauty products, cleaning supplies, baby items, toys, holiday merchandise, home décor, stationery and snacks. It will also offer items exclusive to online which will not be available in-store. Most of the items can be purchased in single units or by the case.
In the meantime, Dollar General has reported its results for the second quarter ended July 29, 2011 with comparable store sales up 5.9% and net sales increasing 11.2% to $3.58 billion. These figures are due to a rise in customer traffic and average transaction amount. Adjusted operating profit climbed 16% to $350 million and adjusted net income rose 25% to $181 million compared to the previous year.
The discount retailer reported that consumables sales in the quarter continued to increase at a higher rate than non-consumables. The most significant growth correlated with changes in and further expansion of the company's confectionery and snacks, packaged foods and perishables offerings.
