According to the US Department of Agriculture, farmers markets continue to expand in number across the US.
More than 1,000 farmers markets have started in the US over the past year, according to the US Department of Agriculture in the 2011 National Farmers Market Directory. That is up 17% compared with a year ago.
The 2011 directory shows that 7,175 farmers markets operate in the US, up from 6,132 markets at the same time a year ago. Almost 12% of all the markets reported the ability to accept food stamp benefits, an increase of 16%.
