FOOD LION LAUNCHES NEW STRATEGY

Delhaize Group-owned grocer Food Lion is launching a strategy aimed at getting ‘back to basics’ in its Tennessee and North Carolina markets this week, Supermarket News reports.
The move is aimed at creating an increased focus on growing private labels, having more price reductions and running cleaner stores which provide better customer service. Sales fliers have appeared in stores in the two states promoting the changes, and Food Lion President Cathy Green Burns has said the initiative will be rolled out to additional markets during 2012.

There will now be a renewed focus on "very competitive prices" and plans are afoot to increase private label penetration to 35% from the current 26% by 2013. Stores will receive new price tags and signage, improved lighting in the parking lot and will hopefully be cleaner and easier to shop at.

In the meantime, Revenues at Delhaize America increased by 0.1% in dollar terms to $4.7 billion despite the negative calendar effect of the run up to Easter of 0.9%.
