Safeway in Canada has partnered with local environmental organization SeaChoice to launch a Sustainable Seafood Policy. With the new policy the retailer has committed to source all fresh and frozen seafood from sustainable and traceable sources, or be in a credible improvement project, by 2015.
The retailer has already removed a number of red-listed species from its stores, including Atlantic halibut, orange roughy, Chilean sea bass and shark. Canned private label yellowfin tuna is also being discontinued.
